Space Saving Solutions: Trundle & Murphy Beds

For an earlier post we showcased Hiddenbed of Oregon and their combination furniture that can free up space for your tiny house footprint. This time the focus is on trundle and Murphy beds: an attractive alternative to loft sleeping!

Here at Tiny SMART House, we can’t tell you how many times we hear, “Oh this house is wonderful! … Except for the loft. At my age/with my knees/after a few glasses of wine, I could never do a loft.” Do you think this way? With our expertise, we can reassure you that of course, you can certainly design a tiny house that doesn’t include a loft. Whether you’re getting a bit older, your joints aren’t what they used to be, or you enjoy the occasional beverage – we can accommodate.

In fact, we even offer fully ADA compliant designs. We can build for wheelchair accessibility, aging in place, and much more (one of the many benefits of being a custom builder!). Here are some photos of our most recent ADA tiny house (a Willamette Farmhouse model, airing out after an application of our eco-friendly green spray foam).

Although our client is healthy and able-bodied these days, she wanted to plan ahead for a future that may require greater accessibility. Once completed, this design will feature ground floor sleeping for our client in the form of a fold-down Murphy bed, as well as a comfortable loft for her grandchildren when they come to visit. In the images below the bed is folded down, but during the day it can be put completely up and out of the way.

One of our Build-It-Yourself clients has another intriguing sleeping setup. She loves practicing yoga indoors, so we designed her home with a trundle bed and open floor plan. During the day, her bed stores away beneath the raised bathroom. At night, it slides right out for bedtime. The remainder of the pocket area will serve as storage behind the stairs.

When we meet new clients, one of their first considerations is sleeping arrangements.
Should I have a loft?
Two lofts?
Which one will be for storage, and which one will I sleep on?
Should I get a trundle bed?
… What is a trundle bed anyway?
How about a Murphy bed?

If you’re looking to save space and still achieve ground-floor living, then a Murphy bed may be the answer for you. In the past we’ve worked closely with a company called Hiddenbed of Oregon. They have some wonderful options for space-saving furniture, from space-saving desks to multi-purpose furniture, and even feature tiny homes and ADUs on their website!

“The full or queen Regal Hiddenbed is a great space-saver for tiny homes and ADUs since it doubles the utility of the space it occupies, providing comfortable sleeping and desk space. The addition of a flat screen TV to the bottom of the bed could also make this into a great entertainment center.”

“In this very tiny home, the owner opted for a Ritzy Hiddenbed, since it can be used as a bed, and a couch, and has a generous desk. Transition between bed and desk is effortless and only takes seconds. Furthermore, nothing needs to be removed from the desk when transitioning.”
